Short Film

Dog Eat Dog

dog_eat_dog-Zachary QuintoWritten and directed by Sian Heder, “Dog Eat Dog” is a short film by Petsami starring Zachary Quinto of “Star Trek” and “American Horror Story” fame. Quinto’s character depicts a rivalry of a man obsessed with a dog at the local pound. Quinto stated, “this story is very close to all of us, as we have all rescued or fostered dogs over the years. The story of the film is an exaggerated account of how I eventually found my rescue dog, Noah, but it still reflects a bit of the reality I faced when I was looking to adopt a shelter dog.” DISCLAIMER: “Dog Eat Dog” contains language that may not be suitable for all viewers.

Whose Dog Is It Anyway?

WhoseDogIsItAnyway“Whose Dog Is It Anyway?” (an 11-minute short film) marks Cindy Chupack’s directorial debut. Chupak has won three Golden Globes and two Emmys for her work as a writer/producer of ABC’s Modern Family and HBO’s Sex and the City. Several episodes she penned were individually nominated for Writer’s Guild and Emmy awards. Other TV credits include Everybody Loves Raymond, Coach, and the hour-long romantic comedy anthology series Chupack created for NBC called Love Bites. Cindy’s St. Bernard, Tink, made Cindy realize that she was, in fact, a dog person, and inspired her to write and direct the short film, “Whose Dog Is It Anyway?”

In this charming and comic New York tale, Emma (Sarah Paulson), single, successful, and NOT a dog person, gets stuck with a dog because her younger married sister (Maria Dizzia) is pregnant with twins and moving into a dog-free apartment. Her sister insists that the dog is a good luck charm–he’ll help you find a man. And this turns out to be true…for Emma’s assistant (Christina Brucato).

Speciesism

scale-and-title-282x300Modern farms are struggling to keep a secret. Most of the animals used for food in the United States are raised in giant, bizarre factories, hidden deep in remote areas of the countryside. Speciesism: The Movie director Mark Devries set out to investigate. The documentary takes viewers on a sometimes funny, sometimes frightening adventure, crawling through the bushes that hide these factories, flying in airplanes above their toxic “manure lagoons,” and coming face-to-face with their owners.

The Intelligence of Crows

JoshKlein

Joshua Klein is a self-described hacker. He speaks a lot about hacking. He’s addressed audiences from TED to Davos to the CIA and NSA, and the thing his talks have in common is how to leverage innovation. From training crows to destroying the global financial system, new technologies and thinking like a hacker produces results.

Think hacking is only about computers? In this TED talk, Klein explains his project training crows to bring him money; an example of using systems thinking to create an innovative solution to an underexamined problem.
